BABY NAMES 2016
Names inspired by film & TV

Which popular films and TV shows are influencing parents-to-be?

The results are in for BabyCentre’s top 100 boys’ names of 2016!

BabyCentre parents are going to a galaxy far, far away in search of baby name inspiration in 2016. The release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is making its mark on the top 100 boys’ names this year. Stormtrooper-with-a-heart Finn is one of the film’s biggest winners in the chart, up five places from number 72 to number 67. And the creator of Star Wars isn’t left out by BabyCentre parents either, with both George and Lucas climbing up the top 100 this year. George is a new entry to the top 10, up four places from 12 to eight and Lucas is up two spots from number 24 to number 22.

Luke is another Star Wars-themed name in the top 100 for 2016, although this could also be explained by the popularity of Luke Cage, a Marvel Comics superhero show from Netflix. Other names inspired by comic books and superheroes include Harrison, which has risen eight places from number 37 to number 29, which may be in homage to The Flash’s Harrison Wells, played by Tom Cavanagh.

There has been a reshuffle at the top of BabyCentre’s chart this year, with Oliver claiming the top spot, Muhammad dropping to second and Noah climbing from fourth to third place. Will Oliver hang on to first place in 2017?

Boys’ names inspired by the 1980s did really well in last year’s chart but have plummeted in 2016, with Michael down 26 places at number 65 and David falling from number 50 to number 61, perhaps reflecting the political turmoil earlier this year.

New entries in the top 100 boys’ names of 2016 include Ronnie at number 96 and Reggie at number 94. Could fans of the Tom Hardy film Legend be naming their sons after the Kray twins? One of the biggest-ever boy bands, One Direction, may also be having an influence on baby name choices in 2016. Louis Tomlinson was the first member of the band to become a father this year. His son’s name Freddie is up eleven places from number 25 to number 14.
